Painter and sculptor Audrey Flack was one of the only women involved in the Photorealist movement. As a feminist, her subject matter was very different from her male peers. Their focus was on detached depictions of cars, motorcycles and the American landscape, but Flack's hyperrealist imagery centered on personal and symbolic imagery referencing women.

"Fourth of July Still Life", created for the Kent Bicentennial Portfolio, Spirit of Independence in celebration of America's 200th anniversary of independence, demonstrates Flack's revolutionary approach to portraying light in colorful still lifes. Flack's combination of two-dimensional images with three-dimensional objects and figurines in acute detail, made her a pioneer of the Photorealist movement despite her different subject matter.
