Cal Breed initially studied marine biology, but turned to visual art as a way to express his creativity with his hands. Beginning in 1994, he initially worked with stained glass windows but the excitement of using and molding hot glass called to him. After obtaining a degree in glassblowing from Ohio State University and apprenticing with fellow-Alabamian Cam Langley, Breed continued to develop his skill by studying at the Haystack Mountain School and at Pilchuck Glass School with master glass artists Dante Marioni, Dick Marquis, Lino Tagliapietra, and Benjamin Moore.

In 2002, Breed opened his own studio, Orbix Hot Glass in Fort Payne, Alabama. In his work, as seen in "Night Water," Breed brings out the innate qualities of glass, stating that he "makes shapes out of light." He does so by distorting the glass optically through various techniques, creating a design that balances proportion, color, purity, and form to meld artistic beauty and function.
