Working in a variety of styles and techniques, Romare Bearden is best known for his innovative collage work. "In the Garden," from one of only two of the major print portfolios the artist completed in the 1970s, dates to the latter part of his artistic career. The work is a lithographic print based on a photographically transferred image, a process that Bearden began using in the late 1960s. In comparison to an individual painting or collage, lithography and other printmaking forms enabled Bearden to produce a greater number of works.

The "pieced together" look of "In the Garden" resembles Bearden’s characteristic collages, as does the composition’s flat, abstract style and bold color scheme. In addition, though birds appear throughout his oeuvre, the exotic-looking one seen in this print’s top right corner reflects the increasing amount of time Bearden spent in the Caribbean—St. Martin, "his wife's family home" during the 1970s.
