Georgia O'Keeffe expressed herself primarily through natural and organic subjects—mostly landscapes and flowers—infused with life force. She consistently sought visual equivalents, both abstract and representational, for her emotional reactions to the world around her.

"Hills Before Taos" was painted during one of O'Keeffe's early trips to New Mexico, sometime between April and August of 1930. During this trip she stayed for a time at the Taos home of Mabel Dodge Luhan, and she began her initial exploration of the desert landscape. Eventually O'Keeffe moved permanently to New Mexico, and lived out her life there, painting some of her finest works in response to the desert environment.
