Albrecht Dürer
German, 1471–1528
From the Large Passion, Edition after 1511 (without text)
Dürer expressed a life-long interest in the Passion of Christ, executing six series on the subject in all.
The story of Christ’s Agony in the Garden is recorded in the gospels of Matthew (26: 36-46), Mark (14: 32-42), and Luke (22: 39-46). After the Last Supper, Christ, together with Peter, John, and James, went to the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives, outside Jerusalem.
The composition of the first is crowded with a wealth of details, especially in the profusion of vegetation. In fact, the plants and rock formations are very similar to those in the 1496 St. Jerome Penitent in the Wilderness. For Dürer, nature’s details not only revealed the glory of God, but they also provided a basis for art.
