Reginald Marsh
American, 1898–1954
Girl on Carousel Horse, employs one of Marsh's favorite motifs. Women riding carousel horses appear in dozens of Marsh's compositions from etchings and engravings to other oils. Marsh produced a whole series of Merry-Go-Round prints in 1930, 1936, 1938, 1940, and 1943. Like the rest of his works, by 1943 the carousel image had become less detailed and more intensely focused on the horse and rider rather than the surrounding setting. The MMFA's painting, a late work from 1948, exhibits this later style. The composition has been stripped of most external detail and focuses solely on the woman and her carousel horse.
