Charles Willson Peale
American, 1741–1827
Charles Willson Peale was one of the pre-eminent artists of the American Colonial period, and his portraits record the faces of a young nation. Although he initially studied informally in Boston, his primary training came in the London studio of his countryman, Benjamin West (1738-1820). The English painting practices he learned in London enabled him to master the skills of perspective, and to render the illusion of surfaces and textures. Peale returned to America in the spring of 1769 and, until late 1775, he based his portrait practice in Annapolis, Maryland, depicting primarily members of the landed gentry. This portrait was painted during that period, however the identity of the sitter is unknown.
