This seven-print suite, designed to recall postcards, irreverently and imaginatively juxtaposes the major thoroughfares of Los Angeles and San Francisco. Having lived in Los Angeles for the majority of his career, Ruscha is intimately connected to the streets of that city and all that they represent. These impossible combinations were designed to represent both a futuristic view of these California streets, as well as to call attention to the immediacy and ease of travel by automobile.
Etching is one of the oldest printing processes. It requires the artist to draw on a prepared metal plate, have acid bite the drawn lines more deeply so that they hold ink, and finally ink and print these etched lines. The resulting print can be reproduced multiple times until the metal printing plate is worn out from use or cancelled by the artist.
