Around 1912, Marin began to paint works that focused on the energy, motion, and construction of the architecture of modern New York City. These pulsating cityscapes became a major theme of artist’s oeuvre and he painted them throughout his career. "Manhattan Movement," created in 1932, is a prime example of these works. In the painting, Marin uses elements of the composition to frame the action and creates a border around the edge of the paper in a gray wash.
