Odell Valentine (aka Odell W. Valentine)
American, 1925–2013
Stars have been a popular design motif for quilters throughout history, but their popularity does not mean that quilters find them easy to make. The most difficult of the star designs is exemplified by this piece, the "Lone Star." The design results from a repetitive combination of single diamond shapes arranged in concentric circles until the quilter achieves a star of the desired size, usually large enough to entirely cover the top of a bed. The design requires great care in hand-piecing because just one mistake can cause the star to pucker; a situation that does not reveal itself until the end, and at which time no amount of pulling or pressing can fix it. Thus this design, successfully achieved as it is here, is considered a tour de force of the quilter's art.
