This plate depicts a fanciful image of the birth of Christ. The source is unknown, but it was most certainly a printed European model, and given the sharply delineated style of the design, most likely an engraving. Decoration modeled after bibilical stories, illustrations or from religious subject engravings were often executed en grisaille, that is, in tones of grey with gold leaf.
