"Yesterday: Civil Rights in the South III" is the third in a series of quilts made by Wells that deal with events from the Civil Rights struggle of Black Americans in the 1960s. The events are depicted as vignettes around the qullt, from the black man rowing ashore in the bottom right to the image of Martin Luther King preaching in the center of a ring of Civil Rights marchers. Along with other specific events pictured, this quilt encapsulates Wells' understanding of the importance of the Civil Rights Movement, and her desire to educate younger generations about the significance of it.
