"In the Realm of the Fantastic" is a complex web of shapes and symbols that float above a painterly, multicolored ground. A nebulous white form emanates from the center of the canvas. Because of its size, the painting encompasses the viewer’s full field of vision, drawing him or her into the deep space suggested by the layers of imagery. The artist, Ford Crull, leaves the viewer free to extrapolate meaning from the motifs—organic forms such as flowers and vines, as well as winglike and heartlike shapes. As the title implies, there is a personal fantasy at work in the combination of iconic shapes and their juxtaposition to one another. Crull places his visions in formats that invite the viewer’s complicity, seeking to engender a transcendent experience away from the everyday world.
