Inspired by a wrapping paper display in a Miami department store in the early 1960s, Sybil Gibson began to make paintings. She recycled the brown craft paper grocery bags that she had saved, and made images of children, flowers, and other designs that appealed to her.

"Flowers in a Blue Vase" is typical of the artist's work, with its very bright color and flat, organic shapes, which bleed into the paper, as she applied the paint while the paper was wet.
