Worcester Porcelain Factory
English, born established 1751
In the course of its early years, Worcester made a variety of vases which ranged from simple bottle shapes to more elaborate molded forms inspired by silver prototypes. This trio is decorated in the Japanese Kakiemon style where imaginary Ho-Ho birds are placed among fanciful chrysanthemums, bamboo, and other exotic vegetation in landscape settings. Kakiemon porcelain favored famille verte colors and ususally depicted a central motif of flowers, animals or birds perched on or beside trees. They also featured narrow diaper (or diamond-shaped borders).
Vases like these would have come in a set of three, five, or seven and were purely ornamental. They are typically referred to as garniture sets, and most likely they would have sat on a mantel shelf.
