This piece belongs to Paul Stankard’s "Botanical Series", which is inspired by the artist's fascination with the intricacy of natural forms. He created this challenging design with a technique called lampworking, in which he separately crafts each part, miniscule to large, from melted glass.

Stankard appreciates nature in all forms, but especially floral forms such as this one. In his meticulous creations he seeks to mirror nature's mystical qualities that have, over the span of history, fascinated and engaged mankind. He also believes in the power of nature to create emotional resonance in the artist and the viewer. He derives signficant inspiration from the poet Walt Whitman’s staunch belief in the beauty and power of nature—this can clearly be observed in many areas of Stankard’s work, particularly this "Botanical Series" piece.
