Tolliver was well-known for his floral imagery and especially trees, with or without perchng birds. As with this work, the artist typically filled the entire space available to him on the support, which was usually a piece of plywood board, masonite, or other rigid surface. Although it was not always his practice to outline the borders of his work, he did so often, saying that he did it to create the impression of a frame, which he saw as an indication of "real" (ie. trained) artists' presentations.
