John L. Lewis (1880-1969)

Lewis was the president of the United Mine Workers (UMW), a founder of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), and a leader of the American Federation of Labor (AFL). He was extremely effective in representing the needs of his constituents. His Presidential Medal of Freedom citation (1964) recognized him as an “eloquent spokesman of labor [who] has given voice to the aspiration of the industrial workers of the country and led the cause of free trade unions within a healthy system of free enterprise.”
