Faith Ringgold’s bright use of color and bold, yet simple, shapes is inspired by another artist she regards, Henri Matisse (French, 1869–1954). Dark figures are painted “under the blood red sky,” drawing the eye to those who struggle to move through a saturated world, dense with hatred and racism. The only bright spot within the image is the small yellow sun with highlighted bursts around the edges. Many of the pieces in this series were first painted or printed using colored lithography, such as the lithograph in the MMFA's collection; later versions were created as quilts, compiled into the collection it is today.
