The title of this painting references the two women seen at the center left, carrying large bundles of laundry in their arms or over their shoulders. Typically, Monday was wash day, and laundresses collected clothing to be washed on the first day of the work week. Fitzpatrick was intimately familiar with the daily rhythms of work and leisure in and around Wetumpka, the rural area north of Montgomery where he lived in the early twentieth century.
