Bricher was a successful American painter of the second half of the nineteenth century who specialized in marine subjects. He began his career around 1856, and while he may have enjoyed some level of professional training, it appears he was largely self-taught.

Manomet is a Cape Cod resort town frequented by the artist later in life. His works of this period are distinguished by a warm tonality, with an emphasis on dramatic light effects and the peaceful aspects of the shoreline at low tide. The colorful, glowing light in Bricher's painting would have carried many connotations for late-nineteenth-century audiences, among them the spiritual presence of God in nature, as well as the resurgence of American culture after the difficult years of the Civil War.
