"Rainy Day" was based on a paintng of that same title, made by Benton in the year this lithograph was printed, 1938.
It was published in an edition of 250 by Associated American Artists in New York.

From the earliest days of Westward expansion settlers traversed the continent, many times displacing original inhabitants and claiming lands from those who had occupied them for centuries. Their farmsteads as homesteads represented the hard work and challenges associated with creating America’s prosperity. Benton’s rolling hills and skies appear to be clearing to reveal a brighter horizon, but may represent a dichotomy: in 1938 the country was fully emerging from the years of the Great Depression, but was also experiencing the anxiety and uncertain future created by Fascist warmongering in Europe.
