Joan Miró (1893–1983) The Surrealist best known as a painter also worked in sculpture, ceramics, engraving, and lithography. Miró arrived for his portrait session looking dapper but demure, reticent to reveal his personality, but Karsh worked his conversational magic, gradually peeling off Miró’s protective shell. The photographer reported that Miró eventually changed his coat for a paint-splattered sweater and finally donned his comfy old hat, then returned to his seat before the lights and looked up as if to say, “So, you found me out.” That’s when Karsh released the shutter.
