Leonard Bernstein (1918–1990) The pianist, composer, and educator was principal conductor of the New York Philharmonic from 1957 through 1969. In the 1960s he led fifty-three popular televised Young People’s Concerts and won Grammy awards for record albums of music lectures. His compositions include orchestral, choral, operatic, and musical theatre, the best known being the music for West Side Story (1957). Bernstein was late for his portrait sitting but according to Karsh, he brought everyone in the room to tears by playing There’s A Place for Us from West Side Story.
