This quilt is believed to have been made in Tuscaloosa (which is in west Alabama) around the middle of the twentieth century. Although the maker is unrecorded, the person was clearly an experienced quilter, very skilled at piecing and stitching. This work exemplifies improvisation by incorporating strips, bars and squares to create a unified whole. The quilt is double-sided, so that a pattern shows even when the quilt is folded back upon the crib.
