This view of the skyline of Amsterdam is probably one of the artist's earliest landscape etchings. He may have made the work in situ, from a site on the Kadijk, which ran up the northeastern edge of the city. Scholars have determined that while the scale of the buildings is not accurate, their order appears to be.
