Chinese Export
Underglaze blue and white porcelain became a highly desired and valuable commodity in Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This underglaze blue teapot with a design depicting a fanciful Chinese landscape, is typical of the wares that Europeans sought. Chinese ceramics for the domestic market were quite different from those made for trade. The Chinese typically preferred simple traditional shapes and subdued decoration. Porcelains for export were essentially commissioned from potteries at Ching-te Chen, five hundred miles from Canton in the province of Kiangsi. European models for shapes and designs were copied and produced in quantities as fashion in Europe dictated. Many of the wares leaving China on European ships were purchased from the stocks at the port of Canton.
