Richards was a successful marine and landscape painter. In 1878 he traveled to Europe to paint and attempt to establish a market for his work there. His European paintings were successful and upon his return in 1880 he purchased land to build a house on the coast of Rhode Island. This watercolor painting is a view along the eastern shore of Jamestown, Rhode Island, on Conanicut Island, across from Newport, which is situated on Aquidneck Island. In 1881-1882 Richards built a house at about the spot where this watercolor was made. In 1899 the US government demolished the house to expand a fort.
