The shape of this tureen is derived from a Meissen model which dates from about 1740. The oval shape has distinctive handles of ‘indian’ mask design with feathered plume headdresses. The cover is domed and rises to a hollow coronet finial which allowed for the escape of steam. As with the Venetian pattern pieces in the collection, the underglaze blue decoration on this tureen depicts a fanciful combination of eastern and western elements.
