A three-legged stool is very practical for use on uneven surfaces, and the typical form of Lobi three-legged stools is also convenient for carrying over one’s shoulder to markets or funerals—the primary places outside the home where Lobi men use their stools. They sit on the stools sideways, with the long leg to the right or left. Generally, only the stool’s owner sits on it, and after a man’s death his stool is usually placed on his grave. Like this example, most Lobi stools have anthropomorphic or zoomorphic features on the two-legged end. When carried on the shoulder, the animal or human heads are upright and facing forward.
