This regional composition is perhaps a portrayal of a bayou environment from Louisiana where Stevens lived and worked between 1921 and 1948. "Inlet with Palms and Houses" is certainly representational, but it is not realistic, and the elements are worked in a loosely abstracted manner. Although undated, it is very likely a mid-career work when Stevens worked to incorporate objective and non-objective elements in a single composition often depicting Southern landscapes such as this one.
