Whitney Edward Leland (aka Whitney Leland)
American, born 1945
Created while a graduate student at The University of Tennessee, "Foil Tie" is part of series of paintings and prints made by Leland in response to the draft and the Vietnam War. As seen here, this series juxtaposed civilian clothing with military uniforms.
While this work aligns him very much with the American Pop Art movement, Leland later moved away from Pop imagery. Instead, he became known for colorful and organic abstract paintings that utilize a limited set of shapes and colors. In these symmetrical compositions Leland focuses primarily on the act and process of painting.
