Gary Chapman

Gary Chapman held the belief that mothers needed to be strong role models for their daughters as they continued to strive for full social equality. The mother in this work is the embodiment of a strong role model through her confident pose and prominent musculature. Her life-size portrayal was based on a photograph of an acquaintance of Chapman’s, who was German, which also inspired the work’s title. The Baroque style altarpiece that surrounds the figures drew from Chapman’s love of the Baroque period as well as Early Christian art, parodying a traditional portrayal of Mary and her child.
