Wayne Thiebaud (aka Morton Wayne Thiebaud)
American, 1920–2021
Like the Pop artists, many of Thiebaud's subjects—images of cakes, pies, and other foods—celebrate everyday and familiar objects, yet Theibaud's primary interest lies in the exploration of paint and the formal qualities of brushwork and composition. Along with imagery that aligned him with the American Pop movement, Thiebaud also gained recognition for his dizzying landscapes of San Francisco and his realist figurative paintings. Created in a limited edition, the color lithograph "Appetizers," 1994, is one of nine illustrations that accompanied the reprinting of Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin’s nineteenth-century French culinary classic, The "Physiology of Taste". Demonstrating Thiebaud's signature style of colorful and bright rows of food presented in a straightforward way, these scrumptious hors d'oeuvres express both humor and a sense of nostalgia.
