Dale Lewis
American, born 1939
Despite a longstanding interest in art and a background in design, Oneonta, Alabama-based artist Dale Lewis did not begin working with wood until his forties. After he began to make furniture for his own home, his imagination took hold and he started creating whimsical, yet still functional, sculptural works inspired by plant and animal forms. Using the color and grain of the wood to guide him, Lewis approaches each piece with a sense of humor. In "Golda Finch and the Starling Darlings", the artist anthropomorphizes several birds, depicting them with a sassy and playful attitude as they form his sculptural vessel.
