Thornton Dial, Sr. is perhaps the most well-known of the late-twentieth century self taught artists who hail from the Deep South. Living most of his life in Birmingham, and working in manufacturing, he made art for his own edification for many years before he began creating it for sale. Dial's drawings are an aspect of his art—he is better known as a creator of painted assemblages of found objects. However his drawings include a number of motifs for which he is now famous. In this case, the composition is composed of heads and torsos of women, along with the image of a large bird.
