Port d’Havre is a classic Impressionist scene of the great harbor at Le Havre, which is located in Normandy on the English Channel. The harbor traffic is arranged casually, much as in a candid snapshot. The ship at the right is cut off beyond the bow, and the composition is more heavily weighted on the right hand side. Most importantly, the artist has painted the work with the small, choppy brushstrokes that are characteristic of impressionist technique, allowing the eye of the viewer to blend them into a coherent image. The vigorous quality of the brushwork suggests what we would expect to find here on a busy harbor—a strong wind and damp atmosphere. Le Havre was a favorite subject of many Impressionist painters, who found an international clientele in this busy French seaport.
