The artist considers many of his works to be landscapes with narrative, and there is a specific story behind this print. On a winter morning he was watching the leaves that still clung to the trees. It was very quiet except when the wind blew, which made the leaves fall. Then the leaves began to drop into the water and, although they were creating ripples, they made no sound when they hit. The print represents the leaves falling into the water; the title Silence emphasizes that this process was quiet. This work is a good example of the artist's mix of representation and abstraction because the leaves are purely representational, but his use of leaves to represent silence is abstract.
