Reynolds Beal
American, 1867–1951
"Off Bridgeport" dates from around 1908, when Beal had a studio in Noank, Connecticut. It depicts a scene that is typical for the artist, vessels at full sail in a stiff ocean breeze. It is loosely executed, with minimal detail and brushstrokes of creamy pigment that have been blended on the surface. Perhaps Beal sketched this very spontaneous work from the deck of his own boat, likewise at sail.
