Freer's paintings in watercolor reveal his mastery of the medium, bleeding the colors into wet paper to achieve a brilliant, painterly effect. While he was primarily a painter in oils, the artist trained in Europe and was exposed to a variety of media and styles, including impressionism. The colorful sky and summary description of the landscape in this painting convey the spontaneous effect of light and atmosphere that the artist was seeking with this method. Although the work is not dated, it appears to be one of a series of paintings he made in 1907 during a visit to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, a resort area northwest of his home in Chicago.
