Tuscaloosa, Alabama native Yvonne Wells took up quilting during the cold winter months of 1979 as a way to keep her and her children warm. With no prior sewing experience, Wells experimented with different techniques and, rather than use existing patterns, she began creating story quilts. Her narrative pictorial quilts often relate to people or experiences that have relevance to her own life. Wells states, “Everything I create is like a story, a record of history to benefit people in the future.” In "Hank Williams Quilt, I", Wells depicts the legendary singer/musician, another native Alabamian, while performing. On the left side of the quilt, within fabric hearts, Wells stitches titles of two of his best-known songs, "Your Cheating Heart" and "Cold, Cold Heart", along with the logo for Crown Royal whisky, referencing the struggle with alcohol that eventually cost Williams his life.
