Edward R. Murrow (1908–1965) The pioneering American journalist joined the Columbia Broadcasting System in 1935 and rose through news reporting to become a vice president. He covered World War II from Europe, riveting listeners to their radios with his insightful analysis of political and military developments. He founded the CBS World News Roundup, directed network news operations, and became involved in television and film productions before leaving CBS to accept appointment by President Kennedy to head the U.S. Information Agency. In Portraits of Greatness, Karsh noted Murrow’s “sharp eye for great men’s weakness and strength.”
