William Glackens (aka William James Glackens)
American, 1870–1938
William James Glackens' work of the early first decade of the twentieth century was heavily influenced by the French art he saw in Europe in 1893 and 1894, particularly that of Edouard Manet (1832-1883) and his contemporaries. However his later association with The Eight, especially Maurice Prendergast (1858-1924) and Ernest Lawson (1873-1939), inspired his interest in the subjects and techniques of the Impressionists. By about 1910, his work was transformed and he subsequently took on many of the stylistic characteristics of one of the chief of the Impressionists, Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919). "Head of Pauline" demonstrates how closely Glackens adopted Renoir’s stylistic approach. Its vibrant color and the distinctive, narrow brushstrokes that produce soft contours are indicative of this shift in his style.
