Jacques Callot
French, 1592–1635
"L'Imprunetta" is a reflection of Callot's virtuosity as a printmaker, filled with more than 1200 tiny figures. It is a panoramic view of a fair held outside Florence, Italy, where Callot was living and working at the time. His technical skills create a "universe in microcosm"—from aristocrats to beggars and from a religious procession to the punishment of a criminal—and must reflect to some degree the actual activities of such a fair. The small scale of the figures demands close contemplation of the scene, and in the course of this examination the seventeenth-century viewer would have probably considered his or her own place in the vast variety of God’s creation.
