Indian Encampment depicts two themes that were central to the work of artist Henry Farny: the importance of community, and keeping a peaceful co-existence within the natural world. that was the historic home of Native Americans. The dwellings, constructed of natural materials, show the connection of Native Americans to their natural home, with shapes that echo the forms of the landscape towering above them. Farny also emphasizes the close relationship between humankind and animals, depicting the circle of horses in the foreground mirroring the group of men seated nearby.
Farny traveled to the West multiple times in the 1880s, and became an active participant in the social lives of those he encountered in Native American settlements.This work exemplifieshis fully developed artistic talents in its masterful handling of light, atmosphere, and space. By the time this painting was made in the first decade of the 20th century, Farny painted in his Cincinnati studio, basing his compositions on photographs and drawings he had made earlier.
