H.G. Wells (1866–1946) Despite humble origins and limited formal education, Wells reached literary prominence before his thirtieth birthday. He is known as the progenitor of modern science fiction. His best-known futuristic fantasies were published in the years 1895–1905, including The Time Machine and The Invisible Man. Still in print today, these works have been dramatized more than once. Social commentary and the development of mankind were his other principal themes. His death in 1946 was regarded as the end of an era: the prophet had died at the beginning of the future he had foreseen.
