Steuben Glass, inc. (aka Steuben Division of Corning Glass Works)
American, (active 1903–2011)
This vase was created between 1920 and 1930 by Steuben Glass also known as the Steuben Division of Corning Glassworks. This was a time of great change for Steuben; they experienced a significant decrease in sales by the end of the decade due to the onset of the Great Depression, and a general decline in interest in art glass. The popularity of decorative art glassware was waning, as the public expressed a preference for a newer style of modernist, practical, and utilitarian glassware.
The founder of Steuben, Fredrick Carder, was forced to change from designing his beloved elaborate art glass pieces to plainer, more functional glass designs. The company closed altogether soon after this vase was created. Its essential simplicity in form and color compared to other color infused and decorated Steuben glassware reflects these changes.
