John Edward Heliker (aka John Heliker)
American, 1909–2000
Heliker wrote about his work, "Nature is what my painting is about... the best paintings I have ever done relate to the deepest feelings I have had about a place...an experience. I choose in my painting to give expression to those aspects of nature which contain an inner sense of harmony." "Maine Rocks" reflects Heliker's representational style, demonstrating the influences of Cezanne and Marsden Hartley. The piece is strongly reminiscent of other Heliker works from this period in its subject (a Maine landscape; he spent his summers on Cranberry Island, Maine), emphasis on angular forms, and the use of large areas of blended color bordered by a dark outline. As his quote above suggests, he didn't focus on descriptions of objects or scenes but emphasized his personal process of choosing his subjects as they affected him emotionally.
