Benjamin Moore

This red glass bowl captures the viewer’s attention with its striking color, orbital ring design, and the suggestion of suspended fluidity. This is an excellent example of one of Moore’s two signature designs—interior and exterior folds. Moore used the appropriately named interior fold process to form this piece. He mimics the historical Italian practice of blowing molten glass and then folding it onto itself. This makes a breaking point around the rim resembling orbital rings along the flat, planar surface. He then carefulley attaches the ring to a round glass ball (‘palla’ in Italian); the molten qualties of both pieces as they are being connected forms a seal around the top of the glass ball creating the whole, finished form. The artist has to make a large number of ‘palla’ and folds in order to successfully create just one of these pieces. He accomplishes his main goal in this piece, “to achieve simplicity, balance, and clarity of form.” Moore further says, “the true challenge of creating an object is give the piece a timeless presence or quality.”
