At first glance William Morris' vessel calls to mind, in form and color, a stylized human heart, its open center filled with objects from nature. Upon closer examination, one sees arranged in this void a colorful blue frog, striped sea shells, and other objects that suggest seed pods, bird forms, and other evocations of the most primative and primeval natural world. Morris implies an emotional connection (literally heart felt), between man and nature—nature is and always has been central to our very being. Morris used rich colors from nature to further suggest the message that the heart is necessary for life, and so too is nature. "Reliquary Vessel" is thought-provoking in its intuitive composition that posits the interdependance of mankind and the natural world.
